A song I always enjoy at this time of year is ‘December’ by the Waterboys, because it’s beautiful and because I find Mike Scott’s ambiguous relationship with religion particularly interesting. For me, this highly atmospheric track is like hearing the story of Christmas for the first time; decoupled from centuries of tired and kitsch baggage. Even for someone of no particular religious conviction, the idea of an infant saviour who is “almost one of us,” is an awe-inspiring and moving story.
